Replicate the sound of a $5,000 Tascam 388 on a cheap Portastudio

Do you only have a cassette recorder? Perfect. I've done years of A/B testing on my vintage mixing boards and tape recorders, and I've figured out how to get a cheap Cassette 4 Track to sound like an expensive Reel to Reel machine. I'll teach you how to get crunchy, warm tape vibe on your drums, bass, and guitars, and synths - for cheap!

No Tape Machine? No Problem.

I have a simple philosophy - I don't waste money on overpriced plugins. Especially when I've developed a system for replicating analog vibe, using free plugins. I will walk you through my process of creating the textures and sonic imprints of analog gear, but all within your DAW - using primarily free plugins. There's also some awesome bonuses which will help bring that authentic warmth & vintage vibe to your songs.

Tap into Analog Minimalism

Before the popularization of digital, the limitations of analog forced engineers to make final decisions on the fly.

Producers had to work from their gut - just like a musician improvises. This way of working has almost been completely lost in the digital era.

This course is a time machine into the lost art of the analog mindset - the old school philosophy of improvisation, and committing to a singular artistic vision.

I hope to inspire you with my minimalist approach which enables me to consistently tap into a flow state and generate material that I not only love - but that helps pay my bills.

My recordings used to sound cold, sterile and boring...

Ever since I was a kid, I loved the natural, warm sounds of 1960s and 70s music.

But as a young producer - I couldn't understand how to achieve that vintage sound. My recordings lacked soul, and I was trapped using tons of midi and samplers.

I wasted thousands of dollars on all the overpriced plugins that claim to replicate analog tape machines, and fancy console preamps. I even paid famous engineers to remix my songs and help bring 'warmth' to my cold recordings. But no matter which plugins I used, or how much I paid the pros to fix my songs... they still sounded fake and lame.

I was so frustrated that I was ready to give up producing music entirely.

And then one day I went on craigslist and bought a cheap beaten up cassette Portastudio...

Immediately, I was blown away by the richness of real analog tape; the organic artifacts, the natural wow and flutter; and the pleasing overdrive. I never heard a plugin sound like this.

It reminded me of that old school music I loved!

And so I became fascinated with Analog Tape Recording.

Why not just use the best plugins to simulate analog sounds?

Here's where my story gets interesting...

I got so obsessed with analog recording that I started collecting and repairing tape recorders. I compared all kinds of vintage machines like Portastudios 246, 414, 424, preamps, mixers, a Tascam 388, a Tascam 38, on and on… I even compared my real Tascam 388 tape recorder vs the Tascam 388 plugin made by Tascam.

And I started posting videos on YouTube about the discoveries I made…

My silly videos started getting some attention. Pretty soon, all of the big plugin companies were reaching out to me, asking me to try their plugins. (and I mean the biggest companies)

And what I learned from trying all of these plugins was truly mind boggling...

The expensive plugins absolutely suck! LOL.

Yup. Tape emulator plugins across the board sound truly unrealistic. And sometimes like a wooly blanket over your mix. Or worse, they introduce harsh digital distortion.

Meanwhile, they trap you in a never ending cycle of software purchases and endless track counts, hunched over your computer - detached from the organic approach.

And that's why I created Tape Recording Tactics

It's my flagship course that incorporates everything I know about using real analog gear.

I've spent years repairing and comparing vintage equipment by TEAC, TASCAM, YAMAHA and more in order to understand what makes a good analog recording.

And now I want to show you how to do it...

You'll hear what tape sounds like recorded on the Tascam 388 - the most sought after Tape Recorder of all time.

I'll uncover how to make a cheap cassette 4 track sound like a more expensive reel to reel, and I'll tell you which gear you should invest in, and which gear is a waste of your money.

I will articulate the artifacts and hallmarks of analog signals captured on real tape, so you can begin replicating them.

And most importantly of all, I’ll show you my old school approach. Comprehensively and in a clear linear format... unlike YouTube tutorials.

YouTube videos are like unsatisfying snacks that espouse conflicting pieces of information. And when it comes to tutorials about ‘Analog’ music - they are usually made by EDM nerds who have never even used a tape machine! What do they know about tape??

Tape Recording Tactics is like a buffet of inspiration that explains my philosophy for creating great analog recordings.

And you know what's really cool?

I've used this gear for music placed on NETFLIX and in commercials for AAA and Pedigree.

Once you understand how to get hot, rich audio signals dripping with analog vibe - your recordings will forever change for the better.

There's an expression - "If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always gotten".

Just imagine being able to make music that is not only sonically rich and dripping with analog vibe, but also groovey and makes people move their bodies to the beat...

Tape Recording Tactics will help take you there, and help you tap into your flow state to make the music you really want to make...
