Are Virtual Lessons as good as in person?
Mar 13, 2022What's the difference between zoom guitar lessons and in person? Can I still learn effectively online? I get asked this question a lot, and I wanted to share my experiences as a virtual guitar teacher.

You can and SHOULD jam with other people, with bands, in groups. That is the part of the joy of music. That will make you grow. But today's discussion is about learning music through private instruction. The most important thing when selecting a teacher is the quality of the instructor (no matter what you want to learn). Does your instructor have excellent testimonials? Do their students stick with them for years? Do they have any professional credits? Have they played with anyone you've heard of? Have you heard them play?! There are absolutely excellent teachers with zero professional experience. They may live in smaller cities, or they just don't like playing out, or they just love teaching. One doesn't even need to be a great player to be a great teacher. But professional credits certainly don't hurt, and they certainly demonstrate a certain amount of experience.
In person lessons are a great way of connecting and jamming together. Virtual lessons are also highly effective. They are also highly convenient. Many of my students actually choose to do virtual lessons instead of in-person lessons, even when they are just a few blocks away. This is not an exaggeration and it happens every single week. My recommendation is to find the best possible instruction.
The best teacher may not be available to you in your city, so don't be afraid to look in other places. Zoom, skype, facetime, google duo, they are all great ways of connecting with excellent teachers.
